The Evolution of a Talent: From Construction Heritage to Pipe Design
The contemporary Italian pipemaking landscape finds one of its most compelling expressions in Friuli Venezia Giulia, specifically within the historic walls of Sesto al Reghena. In this evocative setting, pipemaker Manuele Giuseppe Morassut founded the MG Pipes brand, creating pieces that enthusiasts and collectors also recognize as "Le Pipe del Riccio" (The Hedgehog's Pipes). The entire project stems from a profound desire to reinterpret the historical memory and classic aesthetics of the pipe, elevating them through rigorous and cultured craftsmanship.
Manuele’s initial background developed under the sign of hard work and tangible craftsmanship. After completing his technical studies in Pordenone to become a surveyor and a brief academic experience, he joined his father's construction firm at the age of 18. Working daily on architectural renovation and restoration sites, Morassut acquired a deep sensitivity for proportions, structural balance, and the intrinsic value of durable materials. Despite the stability of this profession, the calling of wood and an ideal attraction to the reflective universe of the slow smoke emerged as a true vocation. This intellectual and technical curiosity drove him, in 2018, to seek specialized training.
The Formative Journey and Recognition by the Accademia della Pipa
The first true technical turning point took place in Bolzano. Here, Manuele attended individual sessions at the workshop of Master Bertrand Safferling, learning the indispensable construction geometries, proper chamber drilling, and the fundamental physical parameters required to create an efficient smoking instrument.
Driven by a determination to perfect every single execution detail, Morassut officially entered the Accademia Italiana della Pipa in 2020. This artistic fellowship brought him into close contact and study with prestigious names in national manufacturing, including Davide Iafisco, Gabriele Dal Fiume, Gioacchino Sauro, and Mimmo Romeo. Under their careful supervision, the artisan not only refined high-end woodworking techniques and the selection of the finest materials, but was also encouraged to shape a personal, fluid, and elegant stylistic identity.
This journey of growth culminated on September 23, 2023, with the official opening of his workshop in Sesto al Reghena, a space entirely conceived, structured, and set up by his own hands. The inauguration drew masters, colleagues, and enthusiasts from numerous regions across Italy—from Veneto and Emilia Romagna to Lombardy, Sicily, and Sardinia—testifying to the high esteem his production enjoys. A milestone that Morassut himself considers, above all, a solid starting point for future evolutions.
Crafting Philosophy: Briar, Rod-Cut Stems, and the Alchemy of Natural Stains
The production of MG Pipes categorically rejects industrial logic to embrace the philosophy of the unique piece, unrepeatable and endowed with its own identity. This goal is achieved through three core pillars of manufacturing:
Masterfully Cut Briar: To shape his bowls, Manuele exclusively uses the finest briar (erica arborea) sourced from the renowned sawmill of Mimmo Romeo, an absolute benchmark for pipemakers worldwide. This excellent raw material, aged for a minimum of three years, is carefully examined by the artisan to follow the natural grain patterns, allowing nature's original design to guide the final shape of the pipe.
Bespoke Stems: Far from using pre-molded or mass-produced industrial components, Manuele crafts every single stem starting from solid German ebonite rods. This entirely manual, tailored process guarantees perfect balance and optimal comfort for the smoker's bite.
Custom Natural Finishes and Stains: One of the most original and exclusive aspects of Morassut’s work lies in the coloration of the wood. The result of a long, meticulous journey of theoretical study and experimentation, the hues and chromatic contrasts of his pipes are obtained also using pigments and stains that the artisan produces himself from strictly natural raw materials. This process enhances the grain and bird's eye of the briar in a truly unique way.
The Ritual of Slow Smoking as a Meditative Dimension
In the hands of Manuele Morassut, the pipe ceases to be a simple accessory and becomes an invitation to slow down. In an era dominated by speed and frenzy, preparation and lighting turn into a ritual that demands a conscious pause.
The secret to a good smoke lies in managing time and breath: a pace that is too fast overheats the chamber, compromising the tobacco's aromatic yield, while a distracted, sluggish pace risks extinguishing the embers. Finding this exact equilibrium, suspended on the fine line between the two extremes, becomes a true meditative activity, capable of restoring serenity to the body and focus to the spirit.
