Gioacchino Sauro: The Harmony of the Dublin Shape in Taggia Briar with Elforyn Accents

Every creation by Gioacchino Sauro stems from the meeting of culture, a deep appreciation of nature, and advanced smoking-pipe engineering. A writer, founder and driving force behind the Accademia della Pipa, as well as an agronomist and senior official with the Regional Phytosanitary Service, Sauro maintains a profound, everyday connection with the plant kingdom, allowing him to “read” briar with a rare degree of sensitivity.

His designs take shape exclusively from briar blocks selected and cut by master briar cutter Mimmo Romeo. Technical precision, balanced proportions, and absolute respect for the raw material come together to create a truly unique smoking instrument.

Briar Selection and Shape Architecture

This pipe features a semi-bent configuration that reinterprets the classic Dublin shape, characterized by a bowl that gracefully flares towards the rim.

Italian-Style Cut and Flame Grain: The bowl displays a regular flame grain pattern that flows continuously along the sides of the pipe. It is enhanced by a natural smooth finish that preserves the wood's original color while allowing the briar to retain its natural character.

BARK TOP Rim: The upper edge of the tobacco chamber retains the natural outer bark of the briar (bark top), creating a fascinating tactile and visual contrast between the smooth, refined body and the raw, organic texture of the original block.

Construction Details: Vulcanite Stem and Elforyn Ring

The shank's architecture is enhanced by a carefully considered color palette and the use of fine materials.

Elforyn Ring: Crafted from a high-quality, eco-conscious composite developed as a synthetic alternative to natural ivory, Elforyn is known for its high density, pleasantly smooth surface, and long-term structural stability.

Blue Tapered Stem: The tapered stem is made of blue vulcanite, a distinctive color that creates a fresh, refined contrast with the warm tones of the natural briar and the light finish of the ring.
