Handmade Sauro Pipe – Natural Smooth Squat Tomato

Every creation by Gioacchino Sauro represents a meeting point between culture, a deep appreciation of nature, and advanced smoking engineering. A writer, founder and driving force behind the Accademia della Pipa, as well as an agronomist executive at the Regional Phytosanitary Service, Sauro maintains a daily connection with the plant kingdom that allows him to “read” briar with exceptional insight.

His visions take shape exclusively from the finest and rarest briar burls sourced from Taggia, selected and cut by master briar cutter Mimmo Romeo. Technical precision, harmonious proportions, and respect for the raw material come together to create a truly distinctive smoking instrument.

Design and Shape: Squat Tomato Chubby

This pipe features a straight, slightly chubby silhouette, offering a contemporary interpretation of the classic Squat Tomato shape.

• Proportions: Medium-sized dimensions combine with a squat bowl and generous outer volume, giving the pipe a solid, comfortable feel and excellent balance in the hand.
• Bowl and Bore: The tobacco chamber has a small to medium-small capacity and a cylindrical bore, designed to provide smooth, consistent airflow and an even burn.

The Briar: Natural Finish and Italian Cut

The pipe features a natural smooth finish, free from opaque stains or heavy surface coloring, allowing the briar to reveal its authentic beauty. The Italian cut showcases the burl's natural structure to its fullest advantage.

• Flame Grain: Regular flame grain wraps around the entire bowl and extends along the sides of the shank.
• Bird's-Eye Grain: The rim, along with the underside of the bowl and shank, reveals a distinctive bird's-eye pattern.

The straight shank incorporates a refined Curly Birch (figured birch) insert, whose shimmering wood grain creates an elegant, harmonious contrast in color.

The stem is entirely handmade from a rod of Cumberland, whose warm, variegated tones blend beautifully with the natural hues of the briar.
