Leo Borgart Danish Handmade Pipe – Vintage Freehand Tomato
This briar pipe represents a piece of history from Danish pipemaking, entirely handmade by Leo Borgart. The work expresses the expressive maturity of an artisan with a singular history: born in Copenhagen in 1944, Borgart initially balanced self-taught briar carving with his career as a police officer, before dedicating himself completely to craftsmanship in the early 1919s. Dating back several years, this specimen stands out not only for the balance of shapes typical of the Scandinavian school, but also for a material detail of profound narrative value.
Structural Features and Design
The design unfolds along a half-bent freehand line, offering a personal and refined interpretation of the classic Tomato shape.
The Bowl and Chamber: With a medium-small overall size, the pipe boasts the typical proportions of the tomato shape, characterized by distinctly robust walls. This generous presence of briar around the chamber ensures excellent thermal tolerance and a cool smoke. In keeping with the dimensions of the piece, the chamber features a small capacity, ideal for short smokes.
The South American Nut Extension: The element of absolute singularity in this piece is the extension applied to the stem. It features a specific nut of South American origin—a botanical and cultural detail that Borgart himself described as a material traditionally used in less affluent areas of South America as an engagement gift for future wives.
Finish and Stem: The smooth finish highlights the natural grain and quality of the briar. The shank connects to an elegant saddle Cumberland stem, which guarantees optimal comfort.

Historical Note on Leo Borgart
The artistic trajectory of Leo Borgart is driven by an authentic vocation that led him, from the 1990s onward, to establish himself among the most original Danish pipemakers of his generation. His creations, always made in very limited quantities, avoid standardization to focus on refined details and harmony of proportions. This specimen fully reflects his philosophy, standing as a rare collector's piece for connoisseurs of Northern European pipemaking.
