Radice Rind Black Stand-up Hybrid Pipe | Al Pascià
In the historic heart of the Brianza pipe-making tradition, in Cucciago, the Radice workshop represents a milestone of fine Italian craftsmanship. The brand's history is inextricably linked to the figure of its founder, Luigi Radice—an exceptional master who, after contributing to the birth and success of legendary brands such as Castello and Caminetto, decided to establish his own workshop in 1980. Luigi Radice infused his creations with an unmistakable identity made of a profound knowledge of the raw material, creative genius, and extraordinary technical precision—a heritage that continues to live on intact in every single piece that leaves the workshop.
This straight pipe, included in the famous Rind grading, is an example of geometric boldness: it is indeed a fascinating hybrid model that effortlessly blends elements of the Liverpool and Brandy shapes. From the Brandy, it inherits the delicacy and softness of the bowl's lower lines, while the nod to the Liverpool is felt in the proportions of the shank. The true disruptive element of strong character lies in the front edge of the bowl, intentionally pronounced by the artisans to evoke the famous "chin" effect—a distinctive feature that recalls the iconic Totò shape, one of the most famous and beloved creations of the Radice house.
The body of the pipe is enhanced by a deep black rustication, a hand-executed, energetic, and dense texture that offers a firm grip and a magnificent chromatic rendition. Contrasting with the intensity of the black, the flat upper rim has been left smooth and in its natural color. The artistic peculiarity of this head lies in the transition: a very light rustication gently fades right at the borders of the bowl, recreating a striking melted wax or candle effect—a detail of the highest school that exalts the plasticity of the briar.
From a functional standpoint, the pipe proves to be extremely practical: thanks to the skillfully flattened and leveled base of the bowl, the architecture of the piece is a sitter (stand-up) in all respects, capable of remaining perfectly upright on its own on any desk or table without the need for external supports.
Concealed inside is a capacious bowl, characterized by a slightly conical chamber drilling. This technical choice is highly appreciated by experienced smokers as it facilitates the draw and accommodates the natural compression of the tobacco pack toward the bottom, concentrating the aromatic spectrum of the blend at its best.
To complete this important creation, we find a short mouthpiece in high-gloss black acrylic, shaped with a tapered design that cleans and slenders the silhouette, providing a perfect overall balance. Shining on the top of the stem are the two wooden dots—the unmistakable trademark and signature of Radice—a guarantee of a work entirely handmade in Cucciago.
