Handmade Natural Briar Pipe – Mimmo Romeo’s Free Interpretation of the Dublin Shape
A handcrafted natural briar pipe by Mimmo Romeo, Master of the Accademia della Pipa. A refined interpretation of the Dublin shape, handmade in his workshop in Taggia, Liguria, featuring a warthog tusk ring and a curved stem.
This creation originates in the workshop of Mimmo Romeo, located in Taggia, on the western Ligurian Riviera. A second-generation briar cutter and founder of the Accademia della Pipa, Romeo was historically recognized by Swedish master pipe maker Bo Nordh as the “King of Briar” in recognition of the excellence of his family’s briar-cutting business. His work is rooted in an in-depth knowledge of the raw material and a wholly manual approach to craftsmanship.
The pipe presented here is a free interpretation of the Dublin shape, characterized by compact proportions and a harmonious, elongated curved stem.
Briar Characteristics and Grain
Finish and Grain: The briar features a smooth, natural finish, enhanced by a classic Italian-style cut. Regular, well-balanced flame grain adorns the sides of the bowl and extends along the entire stem.
Flame Grain and Bird’s-Eye: The base of the bowl and the underside of the stem display a dense concentration of bird’s-eye grain.
Mouthpiece and Construction Details
Mouthpiece: Made from Cumberland material and hand-shaped directly from solid rod stock, the mouthpiece features a fishtail profile designed to provide a comfortable fit in the mouth.
Ring: The stem-to-shank junction is embellished with a warthog tusk ring, a distinctive feature and recurring stylistic detail in the work of the Taggia-based artisan.
Bowl Chamber: The medium-capacity chamber features precise cylindrical drilling to promote an even and consistent burn throughout the smoking experience.
