Francesco Ganci Grade 3F Artisan Pipe – Bent Freehand in Natural Briar and Olive Wood

A handcrafted Grade 3F pipe by Francesco Ganci, Master of the Accademia della Pipa. A curved freehand shape crafted from exceptionally smooth, light-colored briar, featuring a substantial shank and a fine ring made from Ligurian olive wood. Entirely handmade.

The Artisan: Francesco Ganci and Ligurian Briar

The story of Francesco Ganci is rooted in the meeting of artistic sensibility, manual discipline, and a deep connection with Liguria. After a professional career in the beverage industry, his path took a new direction through direct contact with wood: pruning an olive tree awakened his passion for this noble material.

To refine his carving and shaping techniques, Ganci trained at the prestigious Airenti e Lowenberger violin-making workshop, an internationally renowned reference point for the construction of Baroque musical instruments. The knife skills and precision he acquired through lutherie were subsequently applied to briar craftsmanship, leading him to become first a student and later a Master of the Accademia della Pipa.

Today, from his workshop overlooking the Gulf of Tigullio and the Portofino promontory, Francesco Ganci works with carefully selected briar sourced from the historic Romeo briar-cutting workshop in Taggia. He creates unique pieces that combine technical precision with aesthetic harmony.

Shape and Craftsmanship

This model belongs to the 3F series, one of the highest grades in Francesco Ganci’s production. It is a medium-sized Bent Freehand pipe, characterized by softly flowing volumes and a balanced stylistic approach.

Bowl and Shank: The bowl features a rounded, compact shape with a pleasing tactile quality, flowing into a substantial, well-defined shank. The shank follows a gently flared line, gradually widening toward the mouthpiece junction to create a seamless, continuous silhouette.

Briar Quality and Grain: The briar has a smooth, light-colored, natural finish, worked using a classic Italian-style cut that enhances the wood’s natural grain. The base of the bowl and the underside of the shank display a dense, sharply defined bird’s-eye pattern.

Mouthpiece and Olive Wood Ring: The black ebonite mouthpiece is entirely handmade and shaped from solid rod stock, with a fishtail tip designed for a comfortable fit in the mouth. The junction is enhanced by a substantial olive wood ring, a direct tribute to the pipe maker’s Ligurian roots, carefully designed to integrate seamlessly with the shank.
