The Artisan: Francesco Ganci and Ligurian Briar

The career of Francesco Ganci represents a synthesis of artisanal rigor, artistic sensitivity, and a deep connection with the landscape of Liguria. After working professionally as a bartender, his discovery of woodworking and subsequent training at the prestigious Airenti and Lowenberger luthier workshop — specializing in the construction of Baroque-period musical instruments — marked a technical turning point in his career. There, Ganci refined his manual control of carving knives and his skills in precision wood shaping, techniques he later transferred to the working of briar.

Now a former student and later Master of the Accademia della Pipa, Francesco Ganci handcrafts his creations from selected briar blocks sourced from Mimmo Romeo's sawmill in Taggia. In his workshop overlooking the Gulf of Tigullio and the Portofino promontory, the artisan combines traditional tools with lutherie techniques to create pipes with a distinctive character, recognized for the precision of their internal mechanics and their formal quality.

This pipe, identified by the 2F grading, belongs to Ganci's production of bent shapes and medium-sized pipes, designed to provide a compact profile and balanced ergonomics both in the hand and at the bit:

• Finish and Surface: The piece is presented in the Natural Smooth finish, with no opaque staining, allowing the original grain and clarity of the briar's pattern to remain fully visible.

• Bowl and Rim: The bowl houses a medium-capacity combustion chamber. The top of the bowl features an Easy Load rim, a functional bevel designed to facilitate the loading of tobacco.

• Internal Geometry: The bowl is drilled with a slight taper toward the bottom, a technical detail intended to promote consistent airflow and proper moisture management throughout the smoke.

• Stem and Details: The stem is made of Cumberland (striped ebonite) with a Fishtail button designed to provide an even distribution of airflow. The junction between the shank and stem is enhanced by a galalith ferrule, a naturally derived material valued in fine woodworking for its luster and stability.
