The Artisan: Ken Dederichs

Born in Japan in 1973 and with a professional background in architecture, Ken Dederichs became involved in the art of pipe making in 2005. After moving to Germany in 2007, he turned his initial passion into a full-time profession in 2008. His training and development as a pipe maker led him to refine a distinctive style that combines the formal rigor of architecture with the tactile sensitivity of Japanese design.

In his creations, Dederichs seeks a balance between the sculptural expression of briar and the functionality of the smoking instrument, crafting each piece entirely by hand in his German workshop.

General Features and Construction Details

This freehand pipe with a straight profile and medium dimensions represents a refined study in contrasting finishes and the enhancement of the natural material:

• Finish and Contrast Work: The bowl features a light, even sandblasted surface that brings out the texture of the wood grain. One side of the bowl has deliberately been left smooth and finished with a contrasting stain, highlighting a dense and uniform bird's eye pattern.

• Bowl and Combustion Chamber: The bowl houses a medium-capacity chamber. The internal drilling features a regular cylindrical section designed to ensure consistent airflow and facilitate even combustion of the tobacco throughout the full depth of the chamber.

• Stem: Saddle-bit design, carved and shaped entirely by hand directly from a rod of ebonite. The artisanal shaping ensures a smooth transition with the shank and a comfortable bite.
