Amorelli Penna di San Michele *** Pipe: Technical Vanguard and Artisan Fascination
In the panorama of Italian craftsmanship, the Sicilian brand Amorelli has always stood out for its ability to overturn traditional patterns, introducing stylistic and manufacturing innovations that are unique in the world. Among these, the Penna di San Michele (St. Michael's Feather) is arguably the most iconic finish of the manufacture led by Salvatore "Totò" Amorelli.
This workmanship sits at the perfect meeting point between high technology and completely manual finishing. Indeed, Totò Amorelli developed an innovative process that involves using laser technology to engrave the surface of the briar with an extremely dense pattern of very thin, deep grooves, resembling the barbs of a wing feather. This is neither a classic rustication obtained with gouges nor a traditional sandblasting: the laser traces an extremely fine and geometrically regular pattern, impossible to replicate with traditional tools, which is subsequently finished by hand step by step.
To the touch, the result is surprising: the surface offers a high grip but proves to be soft and pleasant, free of the aggressive edges typical of some deep rustications. The three-star classification certifies the excellent quality of the briar and the impeccable aesthetic execution.
Shape Geometry and Texture Contrasts
The model in question develops along a sinuous bent line of medium dimensions:
The Rhomboidal Shank: Breaking the continuity of the main workmanship, the diamond-shaped (rhomboidal) cross-section shank is left completely smooth. This stylistic choice creates a sharp, geometric visual contrast between the "Penna"-worked bowl and the stem junction.
The Stem: Made of acrylic, it is shaped to follow the curvature of the pipe.
Chamber Features
Medium/Small Capacity: The chamber features a contained volume, ideal for short smokes.
Conical Drilling: The chamber drilling is executed with a conical profile. This geometry narrows slightly toward the bottom.
