Ser Jacopo Mangia Fuoco R1 D Pipe | Italian Handmade
Within the landscape of the great pipe-making tradition of Pesaro, the Ser Jacopo dalla Gemma workshop has always stood as a bastion of eclecticism, genius, and rigorous artisanal expression. The Ser Jacopo pipe in the R1 D grading belongs to the famous Mangia Fuoco (Fire-Eater) series, one of the most iconic, bold, and conceptually revolutionary shapes born from the inspiration of master Giancarlo Guidi in the late 1910s.
The name "Mangia Fuoco" immediately evokes Collodi's famous and imposing puppet master from the adventures of Pinocchio: a muscular, theatrical figure endowed with a striking stage presence that commands respect and never goes unnoticed. Giancarlo Guidi masterfully translated these anthropomorphic characteristics into the briar, molding a shape with generous, powerful, and decidedly sculptural lines. The muscular and massive silhouette of the bowl and shank expresses an extraordinary visual strength, specifically conceived for the smoker seeking an object with a marked personality, capable of standing out with proud originality.
This model is developed on an intelligent stand-up (or sitter) architecture. The base of the bowl, carefully leveled, allows the pipe to remain perfectly upright on its own on any flat surface, offering great convenience for daily use without the need for a pipe rest. The chosen finish is a deep, dense, and vigorous rustication, executed entirely by hand. This process not only gives the pipe a natural texture that is extremely pleasant to the touch, but also increases the heat exchange surface area, helping to keep the briar cool during the smoke.
The true technical innovation lies in its special removable wind cap. This ingenious accessory protects the tobacco chamber and allows for wonderful outdoor smoking even in strong winds, stabilizing tobacco combustion and preventing dangerous, anomalous overheating of the briar.
Hidden inside the monumental head is a decidedly capacious bowl, characterized by a cylindrical chamber drilled with millimeter precision. This internal geometry ensures a consistently linear draw and an excellent rendition of coarser-cut tobaccos or complex blends that require space to express their full aromatic spectrum. To complete this refined work of art from the Marche region, we find an elegant mouthpiece in high-gloss black acrylic—unalterable over time—upon which shines the unmistakable silver letter "j", an emblem of authenticity and the signature of the high quality standards of Ser Jacopo.
