Manù Small Bulldog – Italian Handmade Pipe by Emanuele Bruno
The Manù Small Bulldog is an Italian handmade pipe crafted by Emanuele Bruno in his workshop in Matera, Italy. Bruno’s work is distinguished by a focus on compact, lightweight and well-balanced pipes, combining the discipline of traditional shapes with personal reinterpretations and a contemporary freehand approach.
Emanuele Bruno developed his technical and stylistic skills within the Accademia della Pipa, a prestigious association founded by Masters Mimmo Romeo, Gabriele Dal Fiume, Davide Iafisco and Gioacchino Sauro. His work reflects a combination of knowledge of classical pipe shapes and a personal inclination towards freehand interpretations, often characterized by compact proportions and careful attention to balance.
This pipe is a clear expression of that approach. It is a small Bulldog, freely reinterpreted by the artisan according to his own stylistic sensibility. Its particularly compact dimensions are one of its defining characteristics, while the chamber remains surprisingly generous when considered in relation to the overall size of the pipe.
The pipe is semi-curved and features a fine sandblasted finish, which enhances the texture of the briar and gives the surface a distinctive tactile quality. A characteristic detail is the horn accent ring, a natural material that creates a refined transition between the shank and the stem.
The stem is made of ebonite, with a fishtail button, and is cut directly from rod stock. The handcrafted stem contributes to the compact proportions of the pipe. A noteworthy technical detail concerns the connection: despite the appearance of the stem, which might suggest otherwise, it is attached to the shank using a tenon, following a traditional construction method.
Considering the pipe’s very small dimensions, the chamber is notably generous and is cylindrically drilled. The combination of compact size, light weight and a well-proportioned chamber makes this Manù a representative example of Emanuele Bruno’s exploration of small-format pipes.
Manù – Emanuele Bruno
Under the Manù name, Emanuele Bruno produces handmade pipes in Matera with particular attention to proportion, balance and construction. His training at the Accademia della Pipa helped consolidate his knowledge of traditional pipe shapes, which he subsequently developed through his own personal interpretations.
His pipes are often distinguished by their very compact dimensions, without compromising craftsmanship or the clarity of their shapes. Alongside classical references, Bruno also explores freer designs, combining technical experience with a distinctly personal approach to form.
The Manù Small Bulldog is a particularly clear expression of this philosophy: a compact Bulldog interpreted in a personal style, semi-curved and finely sandblasted, with a horn accent ring, rod-cut ebonite fishtail stem, and a cylindrically drilled chamber offering good capacity for a pipe of this size.
